Proper Preparation
If you’re anything like me, you scan all the “expert” advice telling you to arrange your hunting gear well before the beginning of the season. As so many hunting guides and outdoor writers advance, “check and recheck all necessary equipment on a rainy Maytime day, on a sweltering summer evening, or during halftime of a Notre Dame football strategy."
And if you’re exactly like me, you acknowledge the validity of the advice and straightaway ignore it.
I suppose that’s why the first day of pheasant season found me reaching into the lift of my vest for a few samplings of number 6 and instead finding an old Almond Joy, a spout cartridge, and the grocery list I lost back in December. The cartridge reminded me of the last hunting day of 2007 while the grocery roll reminded me of the many times my wife is right and I’m wrong. The Almond Joy altogether provided me a nice morning snack on the first hunt of 2008. The chocolate was chewy and the almond certainly could have been more ecstatic. Still, a good find.
I’d like to say I was a bit more organized for the start of big game ripen, but alas I was again not as dutiful as the expert said. The good talk is I remembered my tag; I packed it neatly into my “deer hunting only” wind up that hangs on a nail in the garage. I know that’s where I had the tag because I put it in the pack the day I got it.
Proper imagine how sorry that buck would have been had I not left the pack hanging on that vigorous. To make matters worse, I had no Almond Joy with me.
But I live for waterfowl edible, and yesterday I decided to organize my decoys, add weights to the ones needing to be replaced, untangle the cords, and even concentrate a little touchup paint on those bright green heads. As for my goosin’ gear, I planned to fill every provocation sleeve with a dose of 3 ½ inch BB shells.
Who am I kidding, I’ll do it when I get out to the river.

An Ohio Buck with Traditional Archery Gear!
This is one heck of a buck with the old Usual Archery Gear. The buck was taken in Sept. 2008 in Harrison County, OH. I have no hint what the score is but the G3 & G4 are long and will definitely help add to the total!

RE: Bird Cleaning 101 for Hunters
Why don’t taxidermists deficiency to mount a duck with lots of pinfeathers?
Taxidermists are in the calling of making you happy. They know that when you come to get your duck and you see a mounting with lots of sordid, scraggly feathers, you won’t be happy. Note the photo in What Do Pin Feathers on a Submerge Look Like? (click on underlined words, then scroll {to virtually the bottom} on that page for correct photo and article). That’s why teal are seldom mounted in September — they are still molting.

RE: A Few More Facts About Deer Hunting
If you have new hunting clothes - that have not been washed yet - then use borax from day 1. Do not use heart softener, do not use dryer sheets. Borax in a chiefly load - use 2/3 to 3/4 cup in load; medium sized millstone = use 1/2 cup; and small load = use 1/3 to 1/4 cup borax. All US detergents have UV brighteners in them which, according to the two articles above, add these brighteners to your clothing. You do not penury this. So never wash your hunting clothes in detergents from the store.
If you have hunting garments you’ve had for awhile, you’ve put UV brighteners into the clothes by using detergents. I’m working on a assay to see if the brighteners subdue over time, by washing in borax. I’ll statement as soon as I’ve finished the study. Stay tuned.

When using a tree belief, your fall restraint system is your single most important piece of appurtenances. A rope or belt around the waist can be almost as dangerous as falling to the earth. A belt around the waist can cause a hunter to turn upside down should they turn out to be inadequate, and the tightening of the belt around their waist can cause internal injuries.
In one read only 15% of hunters wear a safety harness, although studies in other parts of the motherland report figures up to 30%.
Remember to use a fall restraint system, which is any strategy that hunters use to attach themselves to the tree to keep them from falling to the ground in an ungoverned manner, and it also allows them to safely descend to the ground after falling.
The Tree Frame Manufacturers Association and the National Bowhunter Education Basis [along with many other organizations] recommend wearing a full body harness.
A full substance harness has straps under the legs and over the shoulders that are designed to keep you plumb if you are involved in a tree stand accident. This doesn’t ensure you won’t have an accident; however, it minimizes the potential for serious injury.
