The Tiger Woods Effect
It was an unusually cordial day at Pebble Beach. My cousin, Frank, was playing in his first AT&T Pro-Am and I was usual to be his caddy. Frank, the CEO and founder of a very successful company in Houston, has enjoyed a partiality affair with the game of golf since his youth. Like his father, he was a eat one's heart out hitter when he was younger, and good enough to spend some time on the USC golf duo. Frank’s father taught him to respect the sport, its history, the beauty of a well-struck iron, and words to keep away from after a snap-hooked drive. He had a wonderful collection of persimmon drivers and earlier irons in the “golf” room upstairs, where, from the well-aimed spyglass, one could watch players putt on the sixth green at Pebble Run aground. Though his main residence was in Houston, Frank had the means to vouchsafe a beautiful home in Pebble Beach for a number of years. He loved the Monterey Peninsula and was a agreeable and generous host. Now, approaching 60, his handicap has risen over the years, but so has his passion for the gutsy which has enriched his life. This week, however, was going to be unlike any other for both Honest and myself. “We” were going to play in the AT&T.
It was Tuesday and I was having coffee face awaiting caddy instructions for the day. I was unusually excited because Eminence O’Meara was to arrive that morning. Mark and Unreserved had become friends over the years and Mark enjoyed staying with Honest during the week of the AT&T. Mark had just completed his “Jock of the Year” season, winning the Masters and British Artless, and was playing in the tournament he had won more than anyone in the history of the AT&T. In case I haven’t mentioned this yet, I am a consequential school math teacher and golf coach. I used four of my six belittling days to caddy for my cousin, because playing a practice about with Mark O’Meara and being inside the ropes at the AT&T was an time I never imagined possible. Needless to say, I did not need the coffee that morning, as the expectancy of our practice round with Mark had me feeling embarrassingly volatile. I sensed Frank was nervous too. Though he and Mark were friends, I knew he did not lack to embarrass himself with poor play, or do anything which would disrupt Mark’s conduct.
