A organization of mechanical engineers in Lancashire is to help 14-year-old pupils at Leyland St Mary’s Widespread Technology College, in Leyland, to build a battery-powered racing car.
The members of the Rule of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) are hoping to instil an interest in pursuing a craft in engineering.
The initiative reflects IMechE’s support for the reading of engineering in schools and, in particular, for the new diploma in engineering.
“We are difficult to show young people that engineering offers an exciting, honourable, reasonably well-rewarded and varied career,” says Chris Kirby, IMechE’s tutelage manager.
“By doing a diploma, the students can see what engineering is truly about. They will then be able to make a choice of what to study based on facts rather than on hackneyed clichés such as grease under your fingernails, spanner in your give or it’s just all maths.”
The diploma, he says, “is focused on what employers say they scarcity. It gives students a real insight into the world of engineering and does not extort them to commit to a particular career at a young age”.
Employers are supporting schools by contribution them student placements, industry mentors, sponsorships and earnest-life contemporary engineering problems to solve. “The diploma provides a background for the students’ academic understanding of mathematics, physics and chemistry, so they can see the intrinsic value of it,” he says. “It can show, for example, the mechanics, mathematics and physics snarled in the design of a BMX bike.”

First true love...
This unimaginative Ibis Mojo is not my first bike, nor will it be my last....but it is definitely the first racing bike I have ever fallen in sweet with. I finally found my way back on the little thing last weekend and hit up some "new to me" dirt trails in a "new to me leave" (with new friends down here in SoCal). On this day, I was reminded just how special this bike is to me.
We rode some somewhat tough trails (and I think I may have been the only hardtailer on most of the tough ones we rode) however, remarkable thing is... even with the fact that the travel on my old fork was basically non-existent, my wear out tread was minimal, one of my wheels in my wheel set has a nice dent in it to the thought where I had to place a tube in the tubeless wheel, yaddi yaddi ya, you get the station, right? ...honestly, even with all of that I have to say, once I got going on her ("White Lightning" is my bike's name) I was in compute and complete trust that I could handle the trails, regardless of how difficult they were, and regardless of all the "issues" with my bike. I felt like I was hopping on a horse that had been my girl for life!
It was such an amazing day....I love that bike.
In all authenticity....it was from riding this bike (in Annadel State Greensward) that I developed the skills, the confidence, and the fitness that enabled me to go on to become a brave little criterium racer in the pro peloton.
